Session 4: Learning Tasks and Practice

If you traveled all over the world, you'd find that our country, the United States, is only one out of almost 200 countries.  These countries are classified into seven different continents: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia.

Asia

  • Largest continent in the world
  • Connected by land to Europe
  • Has the highest mountain in the world- Mt. Everest
  • Countries you may have heard of or read about in Asia: China, Russia, Japan, India, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Vietnam

Africa

  • Second largest continent in the world
  • Has the largest desert in the world- the Sahara Desert
  • Countries you may have heard of or read about in Africa: Egypt, Sudan, Madagascar, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa

North America

  • Third largest continent in the world
  • Contains the United States- where you live!
  • Includes arctic areas in the north which are icy and snowy all the time, and warmer areas in the south, where it's hot all year, even in the winter
  • Countries you may have heard of or read about in North America: United States of America, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Honduras, Costa Rica, Greenland

South America

  • Fourth largest continent in the world.
  • Has the world's largest rainforest- the Amazon Rainforest
  • Has the world's highest waterfall- Angel Falls
  • Countries you may have heard of read about in South America: Brazil, Columbia, Chile, Argentina, Peru

Antarctica 


  • Third smallest continent in the world
  • 98% (almost entirely) covered in ice
  • No people live there permanently, but thousands of scientists stay there for short periods of time conducting research.  
  • Few animals live in Antarctica- only penguins, seals, arctic terns (a type of bird), fish, whales, and sharks.

  • Second smallest continent in the world
  • Contains many smaller countries that are close together so it easy to travel between countries
